5 Great Outdoor Engagement Session Locations in Colorado

If you’re reading this blog post, then let me guess: You’re trying to find the perfect outdoor setting for your engagement photos?

If I’m right, then I’m happy to tell you you’re in the right place. But while Colorado undoubtedly provides the naturally beautiful backdrop you’re looking for, there are also A TON of options out there.

Where to start?!

Well, I’m here to help you with that!

As a professional photographer for 18+ years and a native Coloradoan, I know of nearly every nook and cranny this colorful state has to offer. And what photographs well.

So here are my top five recommendations for some of the most beautiful places to take engagement photos… from mountain tops to lake-filled valleys… a nature-loving and outdoor enthusiast couple like yourselves may enjoy.

But before we dive in…

Above all else, it’s important to keep in mind that your engagement photos, much like your wedding, should be as personal as possible. A place, whether that’s the coffee shop you venture to every weekend or the hilltop you got engaged, that has meaning to your relationship.

With this philosophy in mind, I promise you, you can’t go wrong.

Now onto my five favorite locations...

#1. Mt. Evans

What’s more romantic than sharing an epic sunset at the top of a 14,000-foot peak?

As one of the few fourteeners that you can drive up, you’ll get a plethora of landscape options - such as the vast granite cliff sides and an abundance of wilderness - to choose from as a background. And perhaps, none more stunning than Summit Lake.

Only an hour and a half away from Denver, it’s close enough to make the trip and back in a day while also getting some pretty stellar shots outside of the city.

Every time I take a couple up here I always walk away with something incredible the views cannot be beaten.

#2. Guanella Pass

Particularly lovely in the Fall, a trip to Guenella Pass - one of Colorado’s Scenic Byways - offers various and distinct environments.

Because it runs west of Denver and south of Georgetown, the easiest way to have a session here is to meet in Georgetown and drive up the pass together. We’ll make stops along the way, including a scenic lake, an aspen grove, and, of course, stunning views from the top of the pass.

And in case mother nature has a mind of her own the morning of our session, I’ll check the pass’s availability to see if it’s open or not before we make our way out there. And if we need to reschedule your session, we’ll find another date and time. Or, better yet, move to our plan b already in place.

#3. Loveland Pass

Loveland Pass is the perfect spot if you’re looking for convenience without losing out on some spectacular scenery.

What I love most about it is the high alpine lake. Which, for the most part, it’s above the tree line and surrounded by beautiful alpine meadows.

You would never know unless you’ve been out there before, but it’s a pretty accessible location to get to based on the setting. The lake is also pretty easy to find, as well.

#4. Paint Mines Interpretive Park

The Paint Mines in Calhan are a departure from the typical mountain ranges, piney forests, and alpine meadows Colorado is known for. So, if you’re looking for something a little different, this might be right up your alley.

Four miles of hiking trails. Fascinating spires and hoodoos that make up the brightly colored desert terrain. Red and orange hues that give it an otherworldly feel… The photos you’ll get here are out of this world!

#5. Crown Hill Park

Crown Hill Park is a natural wildlife sanctuary found within Denver City Limits, but with its wide-open spaces and views of the Front Range in the distance, you’ll certainly feel like the city is in your rearview mirror.

Not only is it conveniently located, but the park also offers a variety of settings. A stroll through the park can lead to open fields with tall prairie grasses, green wetlands, areas shaded by trees, and a beautiful lake. It’s peaceful and serene. So, if you’d rather not decide on one backdrop style, it’s an ideal location for your session.
